Barbie's Salute to Female Leadership

Portrait by Ben Hassett

Just in time for international women's day, Barbie unveils the latest addition to its "business leaders" one-of-a-kind dolls line – Pat McGrath, will be the very first MUA embodied as a Barbie doll.

She’s been a doctor, a teacher, an inline-skater, an actress – Barbie has embodied many professions and characters. Now and for the first time, Barbie has become a make-up artist: Pat McGrath, one of the industry’s most influential artists and entrepreneurs. The limited-edition Pat McGrath doll will be coming to and selected stores soon.

Barbie is pledging to foster a greater awareness on gender stereotypes and how they can be obstructive in terms of women landing executive positions. The multi-layered campaign presents 12 trailblazing women, whereby the McGrath edition is a highlight, focusing on a talent that usually acts behind the camera and that is deeply rooted within the beauty industry.

In efforts to stray away from outdated, patriarchal ideals and represent more inclusive forms and trajectories of women in business, Barbie has designated „Sheroes“; female role models ranging from a myriad of professional backgrounds. This year Pat McGrath and her eponymous Makeup brand enrich the selection of female entrepreneurs that ought to encourage young girls to actualize their dreams.

Pat, who has been granted the honorable title of Damehood by her majesty Queen Elizabeth || in 2020, was further recognized by international bodies for diversifying the Fashion and Beauty industries. Each year Pat conceptualizes looks for over 60 ready-to-wear and couture shows alike but has also managed to make her art accessible to the greater public. Indeed, Pat McGrath LABS products are deemed essential in every MUA’s kit and similarly have permeated to retail at full speed. We’re thrilled to see a girl boss perfecting her craft and pushing industry boundaries.

“It is an honor having Barbie in my likeness, and I would be so happy if it in any way inspires anyone to follow their dreams and believe that with hard work, creativity and preservance, everything is possible.”

– Dame Pat McGrath
