Fashion Week F/W 19/20 Men – Day 2

Raf Simons

The hugely padded coats were without any doubt the plat de résistance of Raf Simons’ FW2019/2020 collection. Those broad shoulders function as a metaphore for the designer’s status. The Belgian designer is still a darling of the international press since his debut 23 years ago, but despite this enviable position, he often missed the point to transform his undisputed talent into a real commercial business. After his relative failures both at Dior and more recently at Calvin Klein as creative director, it’s refreshing to see him refocusing on his own brand and putting all energy into that. It’s no surprise that we can track easily some of his recurrent obsessions in this very stylish collection, from 80s Berlin darkness to bold statement colors. More than a designer, Raf Simons has become his own curator, season after season, commenting or refining the XXL impression he wants to bequeath in fashion history as a menswear révolutionnaire – if not even as a hero.
