“We are all animals and the product of culture at the same time”

horsegiirL on identity beyond binaries

“My worst horsey trait is my stubbornness at times and my most human skill is my imagination.”

Your album “Nature Is Healing” drops on June 5. What exactly is healing here?

I’m healing a little, because I get to share the most honest music of my career so far. You’re healing a little, because you get to listen to music that reminds you that the future is still unwritten and worth believing in. And the world is healing a little, now that a horse has finally made a record giving voice to the often overlooked.

You just collaborated with Weekday. How do you translate the strong persona you are into wearable clothing?

We are all animals and the product of culture and conditioning at the same time. I like the clothes I wear to be an extension of my spirit that day. I don’t like to feel restricted and I always feel like a good outfit allows for movement and spontaneity.

“We are all the wild and untamed being and the zookeeper, holding the key to our own cage.”

The Weekday collaboration places horsegiirL inside a fashion system. How do you see fashion?

It was a lot of fun, dipping my hoofs into the industry, learning a fraction about the behind the scenes of such a fascinating industry. I dont know if this short endeavour places me in the fashion system yet. I think fashion is all of these things at the same time. In its most interesting form, fashion is world building to me, transforming, reimagining and expanding.

When you say “Nature Is Healing”, is that a promise or a coping mechanism?

It’s a prayer, a promise, a mantra, a hope, a deep and ancient knowing. Because nature is so much larger than any human built systems of destruction. She will prevail, with or without us.
