I asked my 5 year old godchild Pouline and her twin sister Peri, who live with their family in Potsdam, Germany, to draw my favorite looks from NYFW, including Collina Strada, Rodarte and Self Portrait.
Because the best way to approach fashion week – or maybe life? – is with a childlike spirit: Open, excited for the new, a focus on fun, ready to play. Being backstage during Fashion Week, seeing make-up artists create, the casting and the clothes is an ideal base to practice this youthful mindset. Sure, there is a lot of hard work and an industry behind it, but, in the best case, it is also a giant playground.
I, as an editor, feel like hopping on a merry-go-round. Some details might repeat after some seasons and often designers push into communicating a certain direction. Yet, there is a thrill, every time.
And it intensified through my godchild’s eyes.
They perfectly turned it into an inspiration: with abstraction, adding excitement – and their special spirit – and made much more colours visible than those our dizzy adult eyes sometimes can see.
