Y(e)arning for more – Lara Severa debuts her first Knitwear Couture Collection

Loosely stitched and body-conforming elements are gaining momentum, especially in the face of the idiosyncratic fairy-core movement. A pair of knitted sleeves or perhaps more of an open weave jumper? A pushover for Lara, who was handed her first pair of knitting needles when she was little. Lara Womann, the designer behind the (almost) eponymous brand Lara Severa, is about to push the boundaries of knitwear. Having worked for some of the biggest names in fashion, including Yeezy and Marc Cain, the 28-year-old prompts a rather sensual approach to her craft.

Though some of Lara’s pieces, amongst them mohair lace balaclavas and droopy leg warmers, lean onto Instagram’s treasured ‚Avant Apocalypse‘ aesthetic, her work pertains much more than that. Carefully selected materials, and form-fitted silhouettes both hand-knitted and forged by self-programmed machines are just a few of the long-winding efforts that lead to her collection’s recent debut at Soho House Berlin.

TUSH went backstage for a cheeky glimpse ahead of the show and met up with La Biosthétique’s glam team for a little rundown of the show’s beauty looks. Carefully laid edges and braids resembling the intricate knitwork showed how closely the hair stylists worked with Lara to compliment the collection. Even the makeup’s color palette was a match; generously applied metallic shades along with almost milky white liners encircled the models‘ eyes. Speaking of models, as if 200 days of nonstop knitting weren’t already enough, Lara took casting into her own accord and convened a crowd of the city’s coolest individuals.  Amongst them were singer Mulay, who rocked multiple layers of distressed-looking knitwear, and DJ Melis accompanying the event with a peppy, dynamic set. We need no more evidence, it’s clear that knitwear’s standing as a pastime activity for the elderly is without fail, a feudal misconception.

Q&A w/ Lara Severa

How did you develop your love for knitting?

I started to become a tailor about 9 years ago at Marc Cain. I’ve knitted before by hand, but I saw my first industrial knitting machine there, which I didn’t know even existed. That’s when I fell in love and never stopped knitting.

How did you pick the models for your first fashion show?

I posted about it on Instagram and got a huge response to that. Every model I picked has their very own personality and I did the fittings with them to match it. We met in my apartment all alone because I wanted to match the individuals’ looks and energies. It was important to me to make sure I’m creating a good vibe for the whole collection by making everyone feel comfortable. Everyone is very different, but we’re all coming together and that’s so beautiful.

Lots of people came to support your show with their unique crafts and talents. Could you tell us a bit about that?

When I decided to do the collection at the beginning of the year, I still had a side job to pay the bills. But some pieces take about 100 hours to make, so around May, I had to quit to fully focus on my knitting. Obviously, there was a limited budget for my first show, so all of my friends started helping me out: One did the set design, another one built my light logo, and so on. Marc Cain sponsored some garments and La Biosthétique jumped in for hair and make-up, Soho House gave us this beautiful location. I’m just getting so much help right now, I feel really blessed. It’s a lot of amazing people coming together!

In paid collaboration with La Biosthétique. Thank you for having us.
